Sailing Conditions: Best time to sail in Seychelles

What is the best time of year to sail in Seychelles

For novices, the best time to sail in Seychelles is between March and May or September and November. During these months, the weather is perfect, and the winds are light, making it easier to navigate with little chance of challenging conditions.

Additionally, the water temperature is warm, making it perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

Sailing around Seychelles is always a relaxing experience due to the predictable weather patterns. But if you are looking for a bit more breeze in your sails, then plan your trip around the trade winds, which are at their most constant from May to October (south-easterly), with very little rainfall. From December to March, the trade winds blow in a northwesterly direction and occasional rain squalls can be expected.

However, when sailing in the Seychelles - as with anywhere in the world - it is important to be aware of any sudden changing weather conditions. The winds can pick up quickly, and the currents can be strong in certain places. So its always important to keep your eye on weather reports and your local charts.  There are also many beautiful reefs and rocks to be aware of, and it is important to follow the designated sailing routes to avoid any accidents. If you are not confident, or prefer to just sit back and relay, then it is important to have a experienced skipper on board.  All of our charter and boat hire fees include the services of an experienced, local skipper so you can rest assured you'll be in good hands and leave the rest up to us!

Tidal conditions in Seychelles

Tidal conditions and tides in Seychelles

The tidal conditions in Seychelles are generally mild, with a tidal range of only 0.5 to 1.5 metres (or up to 2 metres during extreme lunar events). The tide changes every six hours, and the current is usually less than 1 knot. However, it's important to note that the tidal conditions may vary depending on the location and time of year. When in doubt, anchor in deeper water than you feel is necessary, put out extra chain and overcompensate for and drag or swing.

All of our charters provide local skippers who are experts in this area, so you can leave all the tough decisions up to them and simply enjoy yourself!

Mahé Island Seychelles

Anchorages & Moorings

Seychelles offers plenty of anchorages and moorings, making it easy to stop and explore the islands at your own pace. There are several designated anchorage areas around the islands, especially around the most popular spots. Look out for the yellow mooring buoys and tie up and relax.  There are a few commercial marinas available for an overnight stay too, and a few resorts and all of the private islands offer moorings for their guests. It's important to check the regulations and guidelines for anchoring and mooring in Seychelles before setting sail, and if visiting a private island to ensure you have received the necessary permissions ahead of your venture.

Popular (and safe) anchorages include Beau Vallon and Port Launay on Mahé Island; and Anse Lazio and Baie St. Anne on Praslin.

PLEASE NOTE: Our coral reefs are a sensitive eco-system, please be aware of the damage your anchor and chain can do and avoid anchoring in these areas.
